Mallory Pugh is being called the future of soccer. She’s a Mountain Vista High School senior who’s playing on the U.S. Women’s National Soccer team. The team is playing in Rio for the summer Olympics.
Pugh’s skills on the soccer field grabbed the attention of other top athletes like retired soccer champ, Brandi Chastain. In Pugh’s junior year, Chastain showed up to Pugh’s school and surprised her with an award for the best young player in the country. It’s a moment Pugh will always remember.
“Someone walked in, and then I looked and all my teammates were there, and then I saw my parents, and I was like ‘What is going on?’ And then Brandi came in with the trophy, and I was just like ‘Oh my God.’”
Her family has a nickname for Mallory: Mal. Mal says she wouldn’t have been able to get this far without the overwhelming support from her family, teammates and coaches.
It’s just the beginning of what’s to come for this soccer sensation. Pugh has an amazing road ahead. The women’s soccer team is a favorite to win gold in Rio.
